Team Italia gets ready to kick some butt!Actually, the reality is that Linda and I have never done an open water swim race before and hope that we can exit gracefully, on our own two legs. The lifeguards are cute, but in a fairly conspicuous boat we'd like to avoid. In an effort to drive home how lame we really are, Pete signs up for the 3K with no wetsuit and doing butterfly the whole way. The first 1.5k went well for him but shortly after starting the second leg of his race, he realized he was dangerously cold and prudently came in for some heat packs and well earned snacks.
Cheering our survival, or, er, our success! Actually we managed to stick close together throughout the race. As I turned buoy #1, 3 and 4, I was right beside Linda. She took off like a rocket after the fourth buoy and I followed her all the way to the yellow buoy and then in. I climbed out of the water right after she did and we finished at 34:06 and 34:18. We had been hoping for somewhere between 30 and 45 minutes so were quite pleased with the results.
I even ended up with a ribbon for first place in my age group as well as a gift certificate to a fancy spa in Kerrisdale. All in all, pretty cool.
